Spotify HiFi release date: When is Spotify’s lossless tier coming?

Again in February 2021, Spotify built a bold guarantee to roll out lossless audio streaming in advance of the yr was out. Quickly forward more than a calendar year later on, and there’s still no sign of Spotify HiFi.

So, what’s the deal? Spotify has been frustratingly limited-lipped about the fate of Spotify HiFi, but the enterprise has allow slip a couple of aspects about the lacking provider. Meanwhile, recent rumors implies that Spotify HiFi may possibly nevertheless see the mild of day, and potentially before long.

Here’s what we know–and really don’t know–about when Spotify HiFi could finally get there.

What is Spotify HiFi?

To start with declared again in February 2021, Spotify HiFi was described as a way for Spotify Top quality customers to “upgrade their sound quality” to a “CD-high-quality, lossless audio format.”

Typically, “CD-quality” indicates streaming audio encoded with 16-bit depth and a 44.1kHz sampling price.

But the critical expression here is “lossless,” which means that the audio stream contains just the very same sonic depth as its source.

The major marketing issue in this article is that you’d be listening to the songs in the exact way the artist intended–and certainly, Spotify posted a online video in which Billie Eilish and Finneas extolled the virtues of lossless audio streaming.

As it stands, Spotify streams audio at 320Kbps in the “lossy” Ogg Vorbis format, which indicates the audio stream has been compressed and is shedding a reasonable total of element in the interest of conserving bandwidth.

When will Spotify HiFi come out?

The quick reply is that we don’t know when Spotify HiFi will arrive. Nonetheless, some the latest chatter suggests it may well land before long.

In accordance to a publish on Reddit, a longtime Spotify user who experienced recently switched to Apple Audio claimed they received a survey detailed a new plan–“Spotify Platinum”–that offers HiFi, as well as other characteristics such as “Studio Seem,” a “Headphone Tuner,” “Audio Insights,” “Library Professional,” “Playlist Pro,” and “limited-ad” podcasts, all for an added demand (more on that in a instant).

The Redditor claimed the survey asked if they would change back to Spotify “in the nest 30 days” for “one of [those] functions.”

Enjoyable stuff–if it is real.

There have been other, earlier hints that Spotify HiFi is nevertheless percolating, like a “HiFi” icon spotted in the Spotify app again in May perhaps 2021 and a leaked “Hi, HiFi” movie that designed the rounds a couple months later.

Adhering to months of silence about the situation, Spotify eventually did talk up about Spotify HiFi at the commencing of 2022, but the vaguely worded statement available scant information:

We know that HiFi high-quality audio is critical to you. We experience the same, and we’re energized to supply a Spotify HiFi experience to Premium consumers in the future. But we never have timing details to share yet. We will of course update you listed here when we can.

We attained out to Spotify soon immediately after that announcement, but a rep would only say that the corporation did “not have just about anything more to share on HiFi outside of the pleasure for the long term launch.”

More a short while ago, Spotify HiFi went unmentioned for the duration of the streamer’s second-quarter earnings call in late July.

We’ve considering the fact that despatched adhere to-up inquiries, and we’ll update this tale when and if we listen to back.

We’ll also keep our ears peeled through Spotify’s up coming quarterly earnings contact, slated for October 25.

How significantly will Spotify HiFi price?

Once more, we never know for absolutely sure, but according to the “Spotify Platinum” rumor in-depth above, the purported study pegged the price tag at $19.99 a thirty day period, or double the $9.99/thirty day period Spotify Specific prepare. Ouch.

Even though Spotify has under no circumstances arrive out and explained that HiFi would cost more, the wording of its preliminary announcement–“Premium subscribers in find marketplaces will be ready to upgrade their sound quality to Spotify HiFi”–suggests that HiFi is possibly an increase-on or integrated in a new plan, this sort of as the possible Spotify Platinum tier.

It’s also value noting that Spotify examined CD-top quality audio streams as early as 2017, and at that time, it charged an additional $7.50 a thirty day period for the privilege.

When was Spotify HiFi intended to appear out?

Spotify in no way gave a exact release date for Spotify HiFi, but for the duration of its 2021 announcement, it claimed the attribute would arrive “later this year” in “select” marketplaces.

Of program, it’s honest to say that Spotify HiFi skipped its launch window by a reasonably big margin.

Why has not Spotify HiFi arrive out however?

Great dilemma. Back in February, Spotify CEO Daniel Ed blamed “licensing” concerns when asked about the destiny of Spotify HiFi all through a corporation earnings call. Here’s the precise quotation, as noted by TechCrunch:

“Many of the characteristics that we speak about and in particular that’s relevant to new music finishes up into licensing,” Ek instructed investors. “So I just can’t actually announce any details on this other than to say that we’re in constant dialogue with our associates to deliver this to sector.”

There is one more purpose that Spotify could possibly have delayed Spotify HiFi: simply because it obtained caught flat-footed by Apple and Amazon.

Just 3 months after the Spotify HiFi announcement, Amazon and Apple both equally announced (independently, but on the similar working day) that they would commence featuring lossless, superior-resolution, and spatial audio music tracks, all for no more charge. (Apple was absolutely new to lossless and spatial audio streaming, whilst Amazon experienced formerly been charging more for lossless and spatial tracks.)

Pursuing the Amazon and Apple announcements, the prospect of having to pay extra (most likely) for only CD-quality songs and (in all probability) no spatial audio commenced to shed its luster, so possibly Spotify selected to retreat and regroup.

Will Spotify HiFi provide superior-resolution songs streaming?

A good deal of Spotify’s streaming songs rivals, which includes Amazon Songs Endless, Apple Audio, Qobuz, and Tidal, offer you “high-resolution” music streaming–that is, audio that’s encoded at a larger resolution and sampling price than CD-top quality 16-bit/44.1kHz audio tracks.

Most sector types agree that 24-little bit/48kHz is the threshold for higher-resolution audio, and those people streamers that help it supply large-res streams all the way up to 24-little bit/192kHz.

But Spotify in no way reported anything at all about superior-resolution audio in its initial Spotify HiFi announcement all it promised was “CD-quality” audio, which qualifies as “hi-fi” but not “hi-res.”

As for the “Spotify Platinum” rumors, the purported study makes mention of a “Studio Sound” element in addition to HiFi. Could “Studio Sound” mean hi-res songs? Hmmm.

In any party, it’s a make a difference of heated debate irrespective of whether the human ear can basically tell the variation between CD-quality and superior-resolution audio–or for that make a difference, no matter if most individuals can discern the difference involving lossy and lossless. We won’t dive into lossy-vs.-lossless rabbit hole listed here.

Will Spotify HiFi supply spatial audio?

As with higher-resolution audio, Spotify never ever mentioned everything about spatial audio–that is, tunes tracks that have been combined with 3D surround effects–in its Spotify HiFi announcement.

Meanwhile, Spotify opponents Amazon Audio, Apple Tunes, and Tidal do present spatial audio tracks in this sort of formats as Dolby Atmos and Sony 360 Truth Audio.

All over again, Spotify may basically have spatial audio ideas in the works–and maybe which is what the “Studio Sound” and/or “Headphone Tuner” attributes from the Spotify Platinum rumors are all about.

Will Spotify HiFi get cancelled?

Well, anything’s achievable, and Spotify has been regarded to nix significant-profile functions that never very took off.

For instance, Spotify lately pulled the plug on Car Thing, a small touchscreen exhibit that you could set up on a car dashboard for on-the-road Spotify streaming.

For its part, Spotify reported that when Car or truck Issue “worked as supposed,” it chose to halt manufacturing of the $80 system due to “product demand and supply chain concerns,” among other variables.

Spotify also has a background of tests, teasing, and rolling out new functions that later on disappear–or even reappear–without rationalization.

But whilst Spotify would seem ready to terminate characteristics that are not doing work, it also likes to experiment, and Spotify HiFi could be a job that Spotify is material to tinker with indefinitely.

For what it is worth, the official Spotify HiFi announcement is still live on Spotify’s web site.

Up to date on October 14, 2022 to insert new developments and evaluation.
